採血等の基本的検査や医師との問診面談は、高層階に配置された個室対応の診察室で行われる。施設の名称となった『カルナ』とは、ローマ神話にまつわる健康を司る女神のことである。そして、建築デザインの源にはこの『カルナ』が中心に据えられ、「女神」＝「清楚な白い骨格フレーム」を取り囲むようにローマ時代の軍隊をイメージする「楯」＝「乳白ガラスのカーテンウォール」、「甲冑」＝「チタン含有のラインジンクパネル」、「武器とサーベル」＝「７層吊り構造の外部階段と避雷針」といった現代の建築技術を活かした素材や部材が取り囲むように女神（この場合、健康を暗喩している）を守護している。
各階の導入部に当たるＥＶ枠や廊下ホールの天井には、半透明のガラスや小さな丸い開口を通して明かりが漏れるように照明が仕込まれ、この施設の主力機器であるＣＴやＭＲＩの「透かす」技術を投影している。因みに外装材に採用したチタンパネルの目地は、この建築が建つ変形敷地の特性でもある、合わせるとちょうど直角になる両端の鋭角な角度が浮かび上がる様に仕組まれている。
